UK Ads Watchdog Will Now Police Social Sites, With A Little Google Cash

Online marketing is now so mainstream and so prevalent that the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has finally – after about 15 years – decided to step in and start subjecting online advertising to the same regulations as ads that appear on TV, in newspapers or other media. The new rules will target ads that sell products. But the large news is they will also regulate ads on social media services.

Messages on company websites and social media services such as Twitter to be subject to same rules as TV and newspaper ads Marketing messages that appear on company websites and social media services such as Facebook and Twitter are to be subject to the same regulations as adverts that appear on television, newspapers or other media. “Photo Memories” Coming to Facebook Places?

While checking into a Facebook Places location recently, one Mashable reader noticed a new tab: Photo Memories. We’ve been unable to duplicate the same journalism ourselves, which means Facebook might be testing this feature with a small number of users first before committing to a larger roll-out. But this offering is consistent with how Facebook has presented its newest feature.

Index Ventures Buys Into Etsy, Triples Valuation To Nearly $300 Million

Crafty commerce site Etsy just raised another $20 million in its fifth venture round (that would be the Series E). Index Ventures is the new investor leading the round, with partner Danny Rimer getting an observer’s seat on the board. (The board is prefabricated up of founder Rob Kalin , Caterina Fake , Accel partner Jim Breyer and Union Square Ventures partner Fred Wilson )
